Saturday, 10 July 2004
UEFA Cup contenders Gençlerbirligi SK have signed Tunisian attacking midfield player Sami Gtari from Etoile Sportive du Sahel.
French spell
The 23-year-old has previously played in France for Red Star 93, CS Louhans-Cuiseaux, Stade Malherbe Caen and CS Avionnais. He is expected to join his new team's training camp on Sunday.
UEFA Cup campaign
Gtari is the Turkish side's second overseas signing of the summer following the arrival of former Bosnia-Herzegovnian international Elvir Bolic in Ankara. Having reached the last 16 of last season's UEFA Cup, losing to eventual winners Valencia CF on a silver goal, Gençlerbirligi begin their 2004/05 campaign in the second qualifying round.

Club's ambition

Bolic to lead Gençlerbirligi attack
Thursday, 1 July 2004
Gençlerbirligi SK have signed former Bosnia-Herzegovina international forward Elvir Bolic on a two-year contract from Istanbulspor AS, one of four new faces to join the Ankara club on Thursday.
Record breaker
Bolic, 32, has scored 16 goals in 40 appearances for Bosnia-Herzegovina, both national records, and has enjoyed spells at several major clubs across Europe, including FK Crvena Zvezda and Rayo Vallecano, as well as in Turkey where he has played for both Fenerbahçe SK and Galatasaray SK.
New faces
Gençlerbirligi have also signed Yozgatspor goalkeeper Emrah Yilmaz on a five-year contract, and youngsters Murat Kalkan and Hakan Aslantas, who have joined on four-year deals after progressing through the VfB Stuttgart youth set up.
Surprise package
Gençlerbirligi were the surprise package of last season's UEFA Cup, reaching the fourth round where they beat eventual winners Valencia CF in the first leg, before bowing out on the silver-goal rule. They have qualified for the competition again as Turkish Cup runners-up, and will start in the second qualifying round, which takes place on the 12 and 26 of August.
Arica takes charge at Gençlerbirligi
Wednesday, 19 May 2004
Samsunspor coach Erdogan Arica has taken over from Ersun Yanal as coach of Gençlerbirligi SK.
High hopes
Arica has signed a one-year contract after his predecessor left to take charge of the Turkish national team. The Ankara side have qualified for the UEFA Cup next season as Turkish Cup runners-up, but their new coach has set his sights even higher.
'Our target'
"Gençlerbirligi are a side who already have their infrastructure and youth development systems in place," he said. "Our target for next season is either to be Turkish champions or claim a spot in the [UEFA] Champions League. I have been working hard as a coach for two years but at Gençlerbirligi I will redouble my efforts."
Familiar face
Club president Ilhan Cavcav explained his decision to hire Arica, saying: "We had worked with Arica in the past. Two years ago we parted company with him involuntarily and for that reason he has a special importance for me. When it was certain that Ersun Yanal would go, his name was the first that came to my mind. I believe next season we will be a team who will compete for the title."
European successes
Arica, whose Samsunspor side finished seventh in the league this season, three points ahead of Gençlerbirligi, will be assisted by Özhan Kiziltan, Sinan Turhan and goalkeeping coach Sinan Sayar. The new coaches will do well to emulate Gençlerbirligi's UEFA Cup achievements this year as they eliminated Blackburn Rovers FC, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Parma AC before bowing out to winners Valencia CF.
