Gençlerbirliği chairman İlhan Cavcav, a legendary manager who has been in office for nearly 30 years and created a title contender out of a third division team, is now considered an obstacle to the club's success
The newly appointed coach Ersun Yanal has parted ways with Gençlerbirliği just two days after signing a two-year deal, a move that has further fueled the long running argument between fans and chairman İlhan Cavcav.
Yanal, who coached Gençlerbirliği for two seasons, one of them being the most successful year in the club's history, signed a new contract on Thursday with the Ankara side. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Cavcav said they were delighted to have acquired such a brilliant coach, adding that Yanal would be the sole decider on the club's transfer policy for the next season.
However, the weird news came on Saturday. Yanal said despite the earlier agreement, the club decided to sell Ghanaian midfielder Haminu Drahmani to Lokomotiv Moscow for three million euros. "The promises given to me were not kept, this is not the way I work," said Yanal, "at this point I will not work with him (Cavcav) even if he wants me to."
Cavcav took over the Gençlerbirliği chairmanship in 1977, when the club was still languishing in the third division. Over the last 30 years, he has made a well-deserved name in the business side of football, especially in finding young, talented players, mostly from Africa, and selling them to bigger clubs. But with lots money in the bank, and excellent training facilities, Gençlerbirliği fans think it is time to take a further step and they want to have a team that aims for the top.
"This management's concern has never been success," Bülent Atlas, a die-hard Gençlerbirliği fan and a prominent figure of the supporter group Alkaralar, told the Turkish Daily News. "All they care about is money and when it comes to spending, you can never guess what Cavcav will do."
Atlas supports Yanal's decision to leave. "The chairman said no player would be sold, and then sold Draman. He said the coach would decide on transfers, than told Yanal to choose from five players he would put forward. Cavcav has never kept his promises even to the fans; when he promised that we would play for the title, the team could barely avoid relegation."
Since Yanal announced his decision, Gençlerbirliği fans are discussing whether they should continue to support the team. While some argue that the support is for the club, and so it should continue, Atlas is among those saying they will not buy season tickets for next season and will not go to the matches.
"I watch football, go to Gençlerbirliği games because it is entertaining," he said, "if it is not entertaining anymore, I have no reason to go. Being a supporter is actually supporting the team through the bad days, but this is not the case here. We have the money, Gençlerbirliği is a well-respected team, but all the chairman wants is more meaningless money. The club does not deserve support acting this way."
Gençlerbirliği has never had a great number of supporters, but it seems that the next season will even be tougher for the club. As a blogger, dubbed "Oz Kanka", wrote in the blog for foreign football enthusiasts in Ankara, "The round ball in Ankara" 'Cavcav paranın turşusunu kur' (Cavcav pickle your money), will no doubt ring loud throughout next season's matches. That's if we have any fans left."
